So why the rise in ePetitioning?

» View pages in this section

Well, how long would it take to get 3,000 names on a paper petition? So you give up your Saturday morning, stand in a busy shopping centre, and you'll be lucky to come away with 300 signatures for all your efforts. That's about 10 weeks work! It is estimated that on the No.10 website alone, over 5% of the UK population has now signed at least one petition on (5 million signatures from 3.6 million email addresses so far).

When a local issue arose in Lichfield affecting commuting to London on Virgin Trains the District Council thought they had to do something about it. So an Online Petition was set up called lichfield2london. Local press was built up and the petition was signed by some 550 commuters and supporters of the petition.

The result was a fast and efficient approach to this issue at little expense and time spent. And before I forget, the petition was taken to parliament and a solution was met to the joy of Lichfield to London commuters! What a success!
